The design of large-scale crucible induction furnace usually starts with the selection of refractory materials and the simulation test of furnace lining.

In any case, the choice of lining materials for induction furnace is based on the utilization rate and economy of the furnace. No matter for the crucible furnace lining or the groove furnace lining of the crucible furnace, for the sake of close electrical coupling, the thickness of the furnace lining should be as thin as possible without affecting the service life. This kind of thin furnace wall is in direct contact with high temperature liquid metal on the inside and surrounded by water-cooled inductor on the outside. Its working conditions are relatively poor. For crucible electric furnace, there are still repeated heating and cooling, which makes its working conditions worse.

In order to ensure the normal operation of induction melting furnace, the following requirements are put forward for lining refractory.

1 adequate fire resistance. Refractories with refractoriness higher than 1580C are called refractories. The working temperature of induction furnace lining is generally lower than that of molten metal. However, due to the requirement of lining life, it is not safe to use materials with low refractoriness and softening temperature in cast iron induction furnace. As the lining material of cast iron induction furnace, its fire resistance should be higher than 1650-1700c and softening temperature should be higher than 1650c

2. Good thermal stability. Induction furnace transfers energy by electromagnetic induction exchange. In order to ensure high electrical efficiency of the furnace, the lining thickness of induction coil is limited, which makes the lining work in the case of large radial temperature gradient. In addition, due to the influence of charging, tapping and even furnace shutdown, the temperature of the furnace lining is always changing, and the furnace lining is often cracked due to uneven heating, which reduces the service life of the furnace lining. Therefore, as a refractory for induction furnace, it should have excellent thermal stability.
